Leftovers 04:24
Leftovers I hate to be the one to say I told you so but I can’t help it. I hate to be the one to harp on your weakness but you’re so selfish I pledged my love again and again but you wanted the attention of my so-called friend. Look I hate to be the one to say I told you so but that nigga ain’t shit. (chorus) And now he’s put you to the side Grew tired of my leftovers You could’ve been my wine & dine Now you’re stuck with leftovers I hate to kick your heart when you’re down & out but I can’t stop it. I hate to talk my shit but you know damn well you were out of pocket I thought it was gonna be you & I But you were so quick to believe in a lie Look I hate to say that you got what you deserve You thought you were so slick. about

I’m not sure if it is unique to Detroit but there is this thing called a “Cabaret party”. Someone would rent out a banquet hall or especially in Detroit because of all the auto workers, a union hall. Set up tables, a stage, and a dance floor. You get some light catering usually from a family member or friend. Hire a band or two, a comedian, and a DJ. To skirt around liquor license laws make it BYOB (bring your own bottle) and sell setups (soda, juices, mixers, and cups with ice). Set a date and sell tickets. Folk would put on their finest. Women in their furs. Men in their 3 piece with matching gators. Folk would see a show, party, drink, and dance. Do all the line dances. The hustles and slides and wobbles. They would ballroom and two step with their partners. Just forget all the problems of the week gone by.

This album is dedicated to that feeling. If “Steppers” was the album for the cookout, “Cognac & Ballroom” is for going out later that night with your lady to hit the Cabaret. Still funky but smoothed out. Songs to dance to filled with romance and sensuality. Songs to vibe with as you sip on a lil something. Music to ride out to with the moonroof open so you can see the stars.

This is sophisticated funk. This is Cognac & Ballroom.

Thank you for riding with me.
